The university art museum is offering a variety of classes for children ages 7 to 14

Summer Art Camp, where children can explore their creative side and develop their artistic skills, is returning to the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University–New Brunswick.

This year’s camp features weekly classes for ages 7-10 (all classes for this group are full, but there is a waitlist) and 11-14. Morning and afternoon sessions begin Monday, July 1, and continue through Aug. 2 at 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick, N.J.

“This year we are bringing some new instructors into the fold which will enable us to expand our course offerings in terms of working with different media,” said Claire D’Amato, associate curator of education at the Zimmerli.

D’Amato said the museum also will display some of the art made during camp at the New Brunswick Heart Festival at Monument Square Park, 2 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, on Aug. 10.

This year’s camp features a new class, “Comics, Clay and Cardboard: Imagination Unleashed!” Aimed for those who love to draw cartoons, superheroes or out-of-this-world creations, students will learn about character design, color theory and shape language to develop appealing characters and stories all their own. Students will work in both 2D and 3D media.

Other classes include:

  • “En Plein Air” – Young artists may try their hand at “en plein air,” a French expression referring to painting outdoors. Aided by the introduction of paint in tubes in the 1870s, Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet began to produce their works in the landscape rather than in the studio. As with the Impressionists, students will use nature and sunlight as their artistic inspiration as they sketch and paint outdoors while exploring different artistic mediums.

  • “Experimental Painting and Weaving” – In this new class, students will use new materials and media each day – such as paper, dry clay, textiles, collages, mixed media and paints. The variety of activities will allow young artists to express themselves in different ways.

  • “Let’s Get Popping!” – Also a new class, students can dive into the world of Pop Art by exploring the works of Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein and other artists. Bright colors, bold shapes and fun designs are integral to the 2D and 3D projects that will be created in the class. (Waitlist only.)

“The Zimmerli Art Museum believes that art is for everyone,” said D’Amato, adding that the camp “also enables us as a museum to connect with local families and get kids excited about art. We hope that our camp helps children find their creative voice and develop interests that will last a lifetime.”

Parents and guardians may register campers for full-day sessions or morning or afternoon classes. A number of classes are filling up, but there are spots left in the 11-14 age group classes, organizers said.

To register, visit the Division of Continuing Studies course webpage and select "Zimmerli Art Museum" under the “Rutgers Department” field to pull up the list of classes.

Weekly pricing covers one class (mornings or afternoons) or two classes (full day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and includes supplies. Discounts are available for Zimmerli members. For classes that are full, email education@zimmerli.rutgers.edu to be added to the waitlist.
