Pete Cammarano, who graduated from Rutgers-New Brunswick in 1987 with a degree in political science, may be the only person in recent memory to serve as chief of staff to two New Jersey governors – first Richard J. Codey and now Phil Murphy. Cammarano attributes his succees to Rutgers, where, he says, he learned absout government, the role of government and how to drive real change.

When the Baldrige Foundation decided to extend its model for organizational performance excellence in business to health care and education, Brent Ruben, istinguished professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University-New Brunswick and executive director of the Center for Organizational Leadership at Rutgers, led the effort to adapt the renowned organizational assessment planning and improvement framework to universities and colleges. This month he is the sole recipient of the foundation's first-ever education sector award.

Nicholas Page has high ambitions; his goal is to develop the first drug-based treatment for autism. Maine Christos is pushing the boundaries of human knowledge by analyzing data from the Large Hadron Collider. The two students at Rutgers-New Brunswick’s School of Arts and Sciences, are among 211 students selected nationwide for the top undergraduate award of its kind in the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics.

There are many reasons to celebrate this year at the Rutgers University Dance Marathon, which begins Friday. The marathon celebrates 20 consecutive years of students coming together to raise money for children and their families in the tristate area facing illness, while many of the original founders, who organized the first event in 1971, will return for a reunion. The marathon also has special meaning for one of the dancers, Matthew Ramina. He received help from the organizations supported by the marathon after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma as he was about to start his first year at Rutgers.

Cassie Sadowitz has to smile when strangers at an airport, eyeing her Jacksonville Jaguars gear with its distinctive fierce mascot, take her for a team cheerleader. Still, Sadowitz understands the error, given her age and the relative scarcity of women holding the title of general counsel in the storied National Football League. “The fact that I am one of the youngest general counsel in the NFL is intriguing to people,” says Sadowitz, who graduated from Rutgers-New Brunswick in 2009.

The success of both groups – comprised of students from across the university including – Rutgers-New Brunswick's Honors College and the School of Engineering and Rutgers Business School – set a historic benchmark: It’s the first time that two teams from the same university won top honors in Hult Prize regional competitions. Their success also comes one year after a Rutgers team won the $1 million Hult Prize for Roshni Rides, a rickshaw transportation business designed to improve the lives of refugees overseas.

Speaking at Rutgers, Hillary Rodham Clinton said she is encouraged by the number of women, particularly young women, who are running for office or who are active in politics. "I believe we are on the brink,” she said. Her talk, hosted by Rutgers’ Eagleton Institute of Politics, attracted a crowd of more than 5,000 to the Rutgers Athletic Center. The fight against Type 2 diabetes may soon improve thanks to a pioneering high-fiber diet study led by Liping Zhao, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Promotion of a select group of gut bacteria by a diet high in diverse fibers led to better blood glucose control, greater weight loss and better lipid levels, according to research published in Science.
