It wasn’t until she walked into University Career Services after transferring from a community college that she learned how to go about landing her dream job. Lima is one of thousands of students across Rutgers to get help identifying their career paths and applying for jobs. Women who are sexually assaulted and suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can learn to decrease negative thoughts and enhance self-worth by a combining meditation and aerobic exercise, according to a new Rutgers University-New Brunswick study. “The #MeToo movement and other platforms have provided women with an opportunity to tell their stories of sexual harassment and assault. It is important that we also provide them with new ways to help them recover from these experiences,” says study author Tracey Shors, distinguished professor in the Department of Psychology and Center for Collaborative Neuroscience, both in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Rutgers Day, the university’s annual welcome and show-and-tell for New Jersey residents of all ages, will take place Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, offers more than 700 free performances, demonstrations and interactive activities. The celebration includes programming at all three of the university’s locations – Camden, New Brunswick and Newark.

Barbara Ostfeld, a pediatrics professor and program director at the SIDS Center of New Jersey, based at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Hackensack Meridian Health., developed the free app with Thomas Hegyi, the center’s co-medical director, to educate parents and caregivers on safe infant sleep practices, such as placing an infant on his or her or back in a crib that does not contain blankets or bumpers.

More than 20 percent of all preschool-aged children in the United States speak a language other than English at home, yet most state pre-K programs do not collect data on children’s home language, making it nearly impossible to design effective supports for young dual language learners, according to the State of Preschool 2017, a new report from the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers.

Helen M. Berman, Board of Governors distinguished professor emerita of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, is among 213 people elected to the academy this year, including author Ta-Nehisi Coates, actor Tom Hanks, President Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb toured the Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS) at Rutgers-New Brunswick, led by director Fernando Muzzio, to discuss its leading role in the advancement of innovative technology in pharmaceutical production. During the visit, Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. introduced legislation to create national centers of excellence in continuous manufacturing. “This legislation will expand opportunities for FDA to partner with universities like Rutgers and industry to collaborate on a national framework for the adoption of continuous manufacturing while building a 21st-century workforce here at home,” Pallone said.

Students from New Brunswick, Newark and Camden traveling to Washington today will meet with members of the New Jersey Congressional delegation and their staff to thank them for providing increased funding for financial aid. Congress overwhelmingly rejected deep cuts in aid that President Donald Trump had proposed for the 2018 fiscal budget. Students plan to ask for a modest increase in the Pell Grant maximum award as well as ask for continued support for the federal work-study program and federally subsidized loan program.

The president and co-chief operating officer at Goldman Sachs, who studied economics as a Rutgers undergraduate, was instrumental in launching the Road to Wall Street, a seven-year-old program that grooms students for jobs in the financial industry’s biggest banks and connects them to alumni who are already there. He recently spoke to hundreds of students during an hourlong talk at Rutgers Business School in New Brunswick.
