CNN spotlights Theater alum as a “Champion for Change”
CNN has included Theater alum Myla Flores (BFA’09) in its 2025 “Champions for Change” cohort.
Flores, who also majored in psychology while at Rutgers, is the founder of The Birthing Place in The Bronx, NY, an organization of BIPOC doulas, midwives, and maternal health professionals working to improve maternal care in marginalized communities. “People didn’t have access to the care they wanted,” Flores, president of the New York State Birth Center Association, told CNN reporter Abby Phillip. Offering culturally responsive maternal care “really helps them feel seen and heard and connected.”
Theater alum stars in HBO’s Task
Emmy-winning Theater alum Tom Pelphrey (BFA’04) is starring opposite Mark Ruffalo in HBO’s buzzed-about new series Task, from the creator of the hit Mare of Easttown.
“A longtime TV journeyman, Pelphrey enters Task with a lower profile than a movie star like Ruffalo, but provides an equal counterweight to his more established foil,” critic Alison Herman of Variety said in the publication’s review. NPR called Pelphrey one “of the many standout actors” in the series, set in Delaware County, aka Delco, Pennsylvania, like its predecessor. And according to British GQ, “Task’s Tom Pelphrey is quietly giving the TV performance of the year.”
Dance alum built a career as a Hollywood stunt performer
“My first booking in 2017 was a trial-by-fire. Four callbacks after an open call for a film I knew nothing about, I found myself snarling into a camera held by Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron, who was tracking and recording my positioning and movement.
