Building Community with Purpose
Kevin Carolina co-founded the group Minority Men in Medicine at Rutgers. The purpose of the organization is to provide an academic and social support network to increase the number of underrepresented minority men matriculating into medical school.
“We believed that representation was important. Seeing individuals who looked like us who were successful in medicine motivated us not to give up, despite the challenges we faced on our paths to becoming physicians,” Carolina said.

Passion for Math Leads to Goldwater Scholarship
Annie Wei, a mathematics major in the School of Arts and Sciences, was among four Rutgers students to receive a Goldwater Scholarship this year, one of the premier awards for undergraduates in science, technology, and mathematics. Her passion for geometry and the support from her professors helped pave the way for the prestigious award and a future graduate career.
“This feels like a milestone toward an academic career, and I am very grateful,” Wei said.

Finding Inspiration in Data
Taneesh Amin dreams of working in sports analytics, conducting the type of savvy statistical research featured in the book and movie Moneyball. The School of Arts and Sciences student says it’s not only baseball teams that can benefit. Through the data science major, Amin has developed numerous research projects, ranging from NBA free-throw rate analysis to voter turnout in his hometown of Woodbridge, New Jersey.
“Out of all the technical fields, I see data science as the one where I can make the biggest change in the world. It is showing what is happening to help everyday people, and what is happening to hurt everyday people,” Amin says.
